Kirk Johnson of the New York Times writes about Utah Governor Huntsman and the current state of the GOP.

Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. has made waves in Utah by suggesting that the Republican party must move toward the center. With his support for President Obama’s economic stimulus plan, his successful effort to ease the state’s method of regulating liquor sales and his advocacy of civil unions to protect same-sex couples, Mr. Huntsman ignited a debate over what the Republican Party here should be.

Alright, so a friend informed me yesterday on Facebook that she saw my picture on Fox13’s Good Day Utah.  So I’m just barely wondering over to their site and lo and behold the video clip is posted online.

Personally I’m rooting for Kerri Cronk because I think she’s been here the longest.

Enjoy…

Amie Jane Leavitt fell into a writing career by accident.

While working as a schoolteacher, Leavitt and her coworkers discussed what their dream jobs would be.

“I wanted to write and tell people about places I have been or places around here,” said the Payson resident. “Then, two weeks later, I went [online to] AOL, and there was an ad that said, ‘Do you want to be a freelance writer?’”

She applied, and the Internet giant hired her to write travel articles.

Since then, she has written magazine articles and 37 children’s books. Her books include biographies of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and ‘tween pop star Miley Cyrus; a children’s “translation” of the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. She also has written gardening books geared to kids and took photographs to illustrate them.

The hardest book she’s written to date: A choose-your-adventure story about the siege of the Alamo.

It took Leavitt six months and four rewrites.  She had to research the 1836 battle from both the Texas and Mexican sides.

That work paid off when she got a request from a boy who was doing a book report about her book and her.

While Leavitt enjoys writing children’s books, she plans to expand into blogging and try her hand at writing her own stories.

Salt Lake City Educators Learn from Native Americans

Sandra Black teaches Janine Smith how to do Navajo beadwork.

I ran across this article in the Salt Lake Tribune today and thought it was pretty interesting. The Salt Lake City School District has created a program that takes educators to the Navajo reservation for a week to live with Navajo families in order to gain an appreciation and understanding of what life is like for the modern American Indian.

My mother should do this program.

Living with the Navajo: For teachers, a lesson in understanding
By Kristen Moulton

American Indian students in Utah’s schools often feel disconnected. They are far from the land, culture and families they love, and they are often misunderstood by teachers and peers.

A group of educators is trying to change that.

Since 2004, the group has taken about 30 educators, most of them school counselors, to Monument Valley for a week to live among the Navajo, including side trips to visit White Mesa Utes and the Hopis in northern Arizona.

“We thought we had a good idea, but after our first year we knew we had a really good idea,” said Janet Canyon, coordinator for Title VII programs in the Salt Lake City School District.

Latter-day Saints Continue Long Tradition of Gathering for General Conference

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir at LDS General Conference

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir at LDS General Conference

Being raised a member of the LDS faith, I’ve always enjoyed the two times of the year when it’s LDS General Conference.  This is a time where the members of the LDS Church attend (or tune in via TV, radio, or internet) and listen to those who have been asked to speak on various topics in regards to our beliefs.

As a kid I liked it because we didn’t have to dress up and go to church, we just sat in our pj’s and watched it on KSL, a local Salt Lake City, Utah TV and radio station.  It was also a weekend when my mother was always gone. For almost as long as I can remember she’s been part of the team that provides a translation of the proceedings into her native language of Navajo.

As an adult I’ve grown to value this time to connect with my beliefs and to ponder how life is going for me, where I’ve been and where I’m headed. Good times :)

The 178th Semiannual General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be held on Saturday and Sunday, October 4-5, 2008. Speakers will include the First Presidency and other General Authorities and general officers of the Church.

Seriously, so Funny!!!

October 3rd, 2008 by ProvoBoy | No Comments | Filed in Blogging, Humor, LDS, Utah

For those of you that are familiar with local Utah/LDS culture the “Seriously, so blessed!” blog cracks me up. Sometimes I have a hard time containing myself as I read about the “way awesome” life of Tiffany/Amber/Megan/Nicole. I don’t know if it’s more funny or sad that I know women like this.

My favorite blog post this week: right PERSON, right place, right time

Yay for weddings, boo for boring.

Yesterday we had Sunday dinner at JJWT’s fam’s which was WAY fun and tasty (splurged and had TWO BITES of desert, bad I know, blame the feti) and got the seriously big news…JJWT’s bro is FINALLY engaged!!!

He and Ruth have been dating like a YEAR so we’d basicly all given up hope. So, wedding = YAY! But honestly, I just don’t GET her. Hate to judge slash be a downer, but she’s going to be apart of our fam, and not that many people read this blog anyway, and it IS my journal, and I DO need help so I’m gonna share…bless her heart, not to judge, I’m worried. HELP!!
